Sharminub Guru Yoga Retreat & Kagyu Monlam

With an Additional Visit to Sarnath, the Place of Buddha’s First Teaching

02 – 23 December 2019

In this complete Buddhist Pilgrimage package, the Sharminub Guru Yoga Retreat with Jigme Rinpoche and the Kagyu Monlam in Bodhgaya are combined with a visit to Sarnath, the place of Buddha’s first teaching.

It is widely known as one of the four key sites on the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit (along with Bodhgaya, Kushinagar, and Lumbini in Nepal).

Upon reaching Enlightenment in Bodhgaya, Buddha travelled to Sarnath. It is where he gave his first teaching in the deer park. This event is known to Buddhists as “The first turn of the wheel of Dharma.”

In the third century B.C., emperor Ashoka built magnificent stupas and monasteries here, as well as an engraved pillar. And in the year 640 A.D., the Chinese traveller, Xuan Zang, described this place as having a 100 meter high stupa and that 1500 monks were living here.

Eventually, the place was forgotten as Buddhism came to it’s decline in India, and it was rediscovered by British archaeologists in 1835.

Today, thousands of pilgrims from all over the world are attracted by it’s peaceful atmosphere and symbolic meaning.
